The Federal Government and the World Bank have extended the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, L-PRES, to 10 additional states, bringing the total number of participating states to 19.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced the expansion after an L-PRES Implementation Support Mission in Yola, Adamawa State. Officials from participating and newly added states reviewed progress and discussed plans for the next phase of the programme.
The minister said L-PRES is supporting efforts to improve livestock productivity, strengthen resilience and develop the livestock value chain. The programme covers animal health, infrastructure, value-chain development and capacity building for people working in the sector.
The 19 participating states are Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Plateau, Niger, Kwara, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Ondo, Ekiti and Oyo.
The expansion is part of wider government efforts to modernise the livestock industry, improve its contribution to food security and create more opportunities for investment, jobs and exports.
The Federal Government is also working to improve livestock data through the National Livestock Information Management System, which is expected to support better planning and decision-making across the sector.
