Gombe Launches Statewide Livestock Disease Vaccination

The Gombe State Government has started its 2025/2026 vaccination campaign against major livestock diseases across the state.

Speaking at the flag-off in Gombe, Deputy Governor Manassah Daniel Jatau said the exercise is aimed at improving animal health and reducing risks to people and the environment.

He said healthy livestock are important for food production, employment and the livelihoods of farmers and other people involved in the sector.

Jatau said the state government has invested in livestock development through the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development, rehabilitation of veterinary clinics, a veterinary diagnostic laboratory and a solar-powered cold-chain facility.

He also said work has started on a 184-hectare Special Livestock Development Zone, which will include an abattoir, tannery, livestock market, veterinary hospital and poultry production facilities.

The deputy governor urged farmers, herders, traditional rulers, livestock associations and local government authorities to support the vaccination exercise.

He also called on herders to use designated cattle routes instead of major highways.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Salisu Baba Alkali, said the campaign will target diseases including CBPP, Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Peste des Petits Ruminants.

He said the exercise will cover all local government areas in the state.
