Taraba State Government says it will begin arresting and prosecuting livestock owners who allow their animals to roam freely within Jalingo metropolis.
The State Environmental and Sanitation Agency announced the plan during monitoring of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state capital.
Chairman of the agency, Iliya Kefas, said the measure is aimed at enforcing environmental regulations and addressing the risks posed by straying livestock.
He said animals found on major roads and residential areas were contributing to environmental disorder and could obstruct traffic and increase the risk of road accidents.
Kefas warned livestock owners to restrict the movement of their animals or face sanctions when enforcement begins.
He also explained that the monthly sanitation exercise goes beyond street cleaning and refuse evacuation, as it includes enforcement of environmental laws.
The agency chairman urged traders, property owners, livestock owners and other residents to comply with sanitation regulations and maintain clean surroundings.
He said the monthly exercise will continue across the state, with the government providing waste evacuation equipment and public enlightenment to support the campaign.
