Kaduna L-PRES Project Strengthens Livestock Production

The Kaduna State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project says its interventions are improving livestock farming through training, better animal health services and support for pastoral communities. The World Bank-supported programme is focused on increasing productivity, promoting sustainable livestock practices and improving livelihoods across the state.

The project has trained livestock farmers in animal nutrition, feed management, pasture development and business opportunities. Pastoralists also received training on converting crop residues into livestock feed to reduce dry season feed shortages and lower production costs. Women in six communities were trained in milk hygiene, handling and processing to improve dairy production and household income.

Kaduna L-PRES Director, Dr. Salisu Shittu Hashim, said the project is helping livestock farmers adopt practical and science-based solutions that improve productivity, strengthen resilience and support long-term growth in the livestock sector.

Animal Husbandry Officer, Dr. Hafsat Okin, said the project is equipping pastoralists with affordable and sustainable techniques to improve animal health, livestock feeding and household income. She also supported animal health programmes, including disease prevention, livestock management and veterinary extension services.

The project has also expanded vaccination campaigns, disease surveillance and veterinary capacity development to reduce livestock losses and improve food security. Agricultural experts say Kaduna's integrated approach to livestock development is helping farmers improve productivity while building more resilient and sustainable livestock systems.
