Nigerian Expert Becomes First African to Lead World Aquaculture Society

Nigerian aquaculture specialist, Dr Foluke Omotayo Areola, has officially assumed office as the Global President of the World Aquaculture Society, becoming the first African and the first African woman to head the international organisation.

Her appointment marks a milestone for Nigeria and Africa, highlighting the growing role of African experts in global scientific and development institutions.

The World Aquaculture Society, which has members in more than 100 countries, promotes sustainable aquaculture development, aquatic food security and scientific cooperation.

Dr Areola has more than 30 years of experience in aquaculture, fisheries development, aquatic animal health, extension services and youth empowerment. She previously served as President of the African Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society, where she promoted capacity building and regional collaboration.

Speaking after taking office, Areola said her administration would focus on strengthening cooperation between countries, promoting climate-resilient aquaculture systems and encouraging greater participation of women and young people in the sector.

She also pledged to support improvements in aquatic animal health and welfare and to increase the recognition of aquaculture in global food security and climate discussions.

As Global President, Dr Areola is expected to work with researchers, policymakers, development partners and private sector stakeholders to advance sustainable aquaculture worldwide.
