FG Plans Dairy Programme for 37,000 Women and Youths

The Federal Government says it plans to support 37,000 women and youths through a new livestock programme aimed at boosting Nigeria’s dairy industry and increasing local milk production.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, made the announcement during the 2026 World Milk Day press briefing held after a road walk in Abuja. He was represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Professor Eustace Iyayi.

According to the minister, the proposed Women and Youth in Livestock Empowerment Initiative will create opportunities in dairy production, processing, marketing, and agribusiness. He said the programme is currently undergoing consultations with stakeholders.

Maiha explained that beneficiaries will receive skills training, enterprise support, access to finance, technology transfer, and opportunities to connect with markets.

He also disclosed that the National Dairy Policy Implementation Framework will be unveiled on June 1 to guide the implementation of the country’s dairy development objectives.

The minister added that investments under the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy are being expanded to support feed production, animal health services, dairy hubs, milk collection centres, cold chain facilities, and climate-smart livestock systems.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, represented by Director of Ruminant and Monogastric Development, Victor Egbon, said this year’s World Milk Day theme, “Celebrating Women Farmers,” highlights the role of women in dairy production, food security, and rural livelihoods.

Representatives of government agencies, development partners, and private sector organisations attended the event.
