The momentum picked up on Friday when the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, hosted the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Bambang Suharto, and his delegation at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The meeting, according to the ministry’s press team, focused on expanding practical collaboration that delivers results on the ground.

Maiha stressed that food security remains central to national stability and pointed to Indonesia’s growing role in supporting Nigeria’s livestock ambitions. He highlighted the artificial insemination programme in Sokoto and Kebbi States, where 1,000 doses of livestock semen donated by Indonesia have already recorded about a 70 percent success rate and led to the birth of 20 calves.

The minister described the project as proof that well-targeted technology transfer can transform productivity and said Nigeria is eager to scale up similar interventions nationwide. He also noted the country’s interest in learning from Indonesia’s advances in livestock innovation to strengthen breeding systems and overall output.

Looking ahead, Maiha called for deeper cooperation in areas such as breeding centre development, pasture production, animal health, disease control and certification, expressing confidence that the model can help improve genetics, efficiency and profitability across the livestock value chain.

Ambassador Suharto welcomed the renewed push, applauding the minister’s leadership and reaffirming Indonesia’s commitment to the partnership. He disclosed that five Nigerian professionals are set to travel to Indonesia next week for specialised capacity building, marking another step in a collaboration both sides say is just getting started.
