Chicken Prices Soar in Morocco Amid Heatwave and Rising Demand

A searing heatwave has sent shockwaves through Morocco’s poultry market, driving chicken prices to record highs and leaving consumers frustrated at the sudden surge. In popular neighborhoods, live chickens now sell for as much as 23 dirhams per kilogram—well above the promised summer ceiling of 20 dirhams.

Behind the spike lies a storm of pressures. Sweltering temperatures have devastated flocks, weakened egg production, and strained farms without proper cooling systems. At the same time, wedding season and bustling restaurants have fueled demand, while soaring feed and transport costs pushed farmers deeper into difficulty.

The supply crunch has been equally unforgiving. Production of chicks fell short earlier in July, tightening availability across markets. Though a rebound is underway, officials warn it may take up to six weeks before relief reaches consumers. In the meantime, speculation by middlemen and the weight of global feed prices continue to stir volatility, leaving families bracing for more expensive meals.
