URUS Genetics, the global leader in cow breeding and breeding management, has organized an intensive training program for Artificial Insemination (AI) technicians in Ibadan, Oyo State. The workshop, which is part of the continuous training series of AI technicians across Nigeria, brought together 25 selected participants from Oyo and Osun States, and was designed to enhance knowledge in modern cattle breeding and genetic improvement.
Many of the participants, drawn largely from cattle breeding farms, received hands-on lessons in the science and practice of artificial insemination.
Speaking at the opening, Mr. Adekunle John Olayiwola, Country Manager of URUS Genetics in Nigeria, said the training was tailored to give farmers practical skills to begin AI operations on their farms. He stressed that the broader goal is to create “the next generation of cattle with improved genetics, leading to more milk and more profit.”

Olayiwola also highlighted the role of GENEX™, a URUS subsidiary, in providing quality semen globally. He reassured participants that GENEX semen straws will remain the most affordable in Nigeria, ensuring wider adoption among farmers.
The lead facilitator, Mr. Suraj Ajiboye, MD/CEO of Smap Farms, underscored the importance of understanding heat and estrous cycles in AI practice. He encouraged participants not to view AI solely as a business venture but as a critical tool in securing long-term success for crossbreeding programs across the country.

As part of the curriculum, participants worked in groups to review Nigeria’s crossbreeding efforts—identifying past mistakes, successes, and best practices to sustain progress.
Jeremiah Karuga, Director at URUS Genetics, joined virtually to caution new technicians against common errors such as rushing inseminations, poor semen storage, neglecting farmer feedback, and overpromising results.
The training also drew high-profile guests. On one of the sessions, Mr. Ahmad Pasha, Global Dairy Director for the Middle East, Pakistan and Africa at FrieslandCampina ENGRO, alongside Mr. Zeeshan Ur Rab, Project Manager for the Value-4-Dairy Project (BMGF), visited participants to observe their progress.
Pasha emphasized Nigeria’s urgent need for skilled AI technicians and commended URUS Genetics for delivering a “world-class training workshop.” He urged participants to see themselves as pioneers of a stronger dairy industry in Nigeria.
The workshop ended on a high note, with participants giving positive feedback on the practical knowledge gained, signaling a new wave of skilled technicians ready to transform cattle breeding across the country.
