Federal Government Compensate Bird Flu Victims with N1.8bn

At the annual Nigerian Poultry Show titled, “Repositioning the Nigerian Poultry Industry - Path to Economic Growth and Recovery” of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), it was revealed by the National President of the association, Ezekiel Ibrahim, that poultry farmers who were affected by the avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak in 2015 have received compensation totaling about NGN1.8bn.

Mr. Ibrahim, at the show, pointed out that the problems plaguing the industry have not hindered it from rapid development particularly in the area of export in the sub-Saharan African market.

Deputy Managing Director of Grand Cereals Limited, Muktar Yakassi noted that the performance of the current poultry industry in the country is still sub-optimal and requires re-engineering. He also remarked that “the current egg output of the poultry industry in Nigeria does not meet the requirements of egg consumers – 15 billion eggs are consumed which are laid by about 59 million laying birds.”
