Stakeholders in Nigeria's poultry sector have called on the Federal Government to ensure adequate funding and effective implementation of the National Animal Feed and Fodder Policy to reduce feed prices and support poultry farmers.
The call was made by the Sustainable Entrepreneurship-led Poultry Transformation Programme, SEPTP, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, following a stakeholder workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Abuja.
The programme said high feed prices and irregular supplies continue to affect the businesses and income of young poultry entrepreneurs, particularly women and persons with disabilities.
SEPTP said the policy's implementation framework includes community storage facilities, early-warning systems for feed shortages, improved coordination and better access to finance.
The programme also highlighted the use of processed high-quality cassava peels as an alternative poultry feed ingredient, creating business opportunities for young women.
It urged the government to establish clear responsibilities and funding arrangements while involving farmers and young entrepreneurs in the implementation process.
