Kenya Urged to Boost Investment in Modern Livestock Technology

Kenya’s government has called for increased investment in modern livestock technologies, scientific research and climate-resilient animal breeds to improve production, strengthen food security and reduce dependence on food imports.

The Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation, Professor Shaukat Abdulrazak, made the call at the Animal Production Society of Kenya’s annual scientific symposium in Malindi. He urged livestock experts to adopt technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology and precision farming to improve productivity, especially during dry seasons.

He said innovations, including sensors, cameras and DNA testing, could help farmers monitor animal health, improve feeding, manage breeding and increase production. He also stressed the need to develop livestock breeds that can survive harsh weather conditions and perform well with available feed resources.

Professor Abdulrazak called for stronger cooperation between government agencies, universities and research institutions to develop practical solutions to livestock production challenges. He also urged professionals to encourage more young people to pursue careers in animal production.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Animal Production Society of Kenya, Evans Makokha, said the livestock sector was facing serious feed shortages following the failure of the October to December 2025 rains.

Makokha called on the government to support the proposed Animal Production Professionals and Technicians Bill, which is before the Cabinet. He said the legislation would regulate the profession, promote accountability and ensure farmers receive guidance from qualified livestock experts.
