Namibia Expands FMD Controls as EU Restricts Some Meat Imports

Namibia is tightening livestock movement controls after foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was confirmed in two regions, with the outbreak also affecting access to some European meat markets.

The first cases were detected on a commercial farm in the Kharas Region on September 23, 2026. By October 6, authorities had recorded 129 positive animal samples across 17 farms. The disease was later confirmed in cattle at Kalala Island in the northern Zambezi Region, where all 12 samples collected from suspected cases tested positive.

Veterinary authorities have introduced movement restrictions, suspended livestock auctions and other animal gatherings, and halted slaughter at local abattoirs. Emergency vaccination, roadblocks and intensified surveillance are also underway to contain the disease.

The European Union has temporarily suspended imports of specified fresh and processed meat products from Namibia’s previously approved export zone. However, the measure does not cover all Namibian meat imports, as certain treated products and eligible consignments certified before September 23 may still qualify under transitional arrangements.

The outbreak is putting pressure on farmers and meat processors. Meatco reportedly placed about 400 production workers on three weeks of special leave with full pay, while authorities continue efforts to contain infections and restore market access.

Namibia is also strengthening veterinary fencing in high-risk areas, including along the Orange River near the South African border. Farmers say movement restrictions are affecting livestock sales and income, and warn that prices may remain under pressure until export markets reopen.
