The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, L-PRES, has transferred a newly commissioned livestock quarantine facility in Ogun State to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, NAQS.
The Animal Resting and Quarantine Facility, located in Imeko-Afon, is designed to improve livestock movement control and help prevent the spread of transboundary animal diseases.
According to L-PRES National Communications and ICT Specialist, Adams Ishiaku, the facility provides a holding area where animals in transit can rest, receive water and undergo mandatory veterinary inspection before continuing their journey.
Animals requiring further attention can also be examined and quarantined at the facility. Trained quarantine officers will manage its daily operations, supported by digital systems for recording livestock movement and monitoring the facility.
The project says the digital route guide will also provide herders and livestock traders with information on approved livestock corridors and available resting points.
