The Federal Government is discussing technical cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO, to develop a livestock traceability system that can support food safety and meat exports.
The discussions involve animal identification and tracking, laboratory services, certification and compliance with international trade requirements.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Chinyere Akujobi, said a reliable traceability system is important as Nigeria works to increase livestock production and access export markets. She added that safety standards should cover products sold locally as well as those exported.
The ministry said it is developing a policy framework for animal identification and traceability and is seeking UNIDO’s technical support on digital systems, infrastructure and training.
UNIDO said it could assist with digital livestock identification, databases, laboratory testing, inspector training and certification. The organisation will also help assess existing capacity and identify areas that need improvement.
The proposed cooperation is expected to help Nigeria improve the traceability, testing and certification of meat, honey and other livestock products for domestic and international markets.
