NASHGODAN Seeks Demonstration Farms Across Nigeria for Sheep, Goat Production

The National Sheep and Goat Development Association of Nigeria, NASHGODAN, has urged the Federal Government to establish demonstration farms across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The association says the centres would give farmers access to practical training in improved breeding, animal health and feeding, while helping increase productivity and income.

NASHGODAN National President, Abdullateef Ahmed, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

He said the proposed farms could also support disease control efforts, including the fight against Peste des Petits Ruminants, sheep and goat pox, and other diseases affecting small ruminants.

Ahmed said the centres could provide vaccination and treatment services, as well as training opportunities for farmers, youths and women.

He identified disease outbreaks, poor breeding programmes, limited market access, inadequate financing, insecurity and weak value chains as major challenges facing the industry.

He also called for greater involvement of farmers in government programmes and policy decisions, saying this could improve disease control and protect public health.

Ahmed encouraged young Nigerians to view sheep and goat farming as a modern agribusiness, saying the sector can provide income, employment and support food security.
