Kwara Trains Over 200 Livestock Farmers on Disease Prevention

The Kwara State Government has trained more than 200 livestock farmers on biosecurity measures aimed at preventing the introduction and spread of animal diseases on farms across the state.

The training was organised through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, L-PRES, in Ilorin. It covered farm hygiene, movement control, waste management, disease reporting, biosecurity infrastructure and the development of standard operating procedures.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Toyosi Thomas, said effective biosecurity can protect animal health, improve productivity and reduce losses caused by disease outbreaks. She also highlighted the need for proper udder health management, including clean housing, hygienic milking procedures and the isolation of newly introduced animals.

Farmers were advised to invest in measures such as perimeter fencing, quarantine facilities, footbaths, vehicle sanitation points and proper drainage systems.

Officials said adopting these practices from production through processing and marketing would help reduce disease risks, improve livestock productivity and protect both animal and public health.
