The Federal Government says it plans to upgrade the Wudil Livestock Market in Kano State into an international-standard livestock trading hub for West Africa.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this during an inspection of livestock facilities in Kano State. He said the market is a key asset, handling an estimated 130 trucks of livestock every week, with each truck carrying at least 35 cattle.
Maiha said although the market is one of the busiest in Northern Nigeria, it faces challenges including poor sanitation, inadequate slaughter facilities, lack of loading bays, weak veterinary services, and limited regulatory control. He said the planned upgrade will introduce modern animal pens, quarantine and inspection units, banking and administrative offices, security posts, organised commercial areas, and a regulated system for registering and tracking livestock transactions.
He added that the reforms are aimed at reducing losses associated with transporting live animals and promoting value addition through feedlots and modern abattoirs. Kano State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, welcomed the initiative, saying the state is committed to partnering with the Federal Government to develop Wudil into a model livestock market. The minister also visited feedlots, the Wudil Milk Collection Centre, and Samal Integrated Farm to discuss improvements in dairy production and livestock development.
