Coastal Governors Asked to Implement AU Fisheries Policy

Coastal state governors have been urged to adopt the African Union Policy Framework and Reform Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture to promote sustainable management of marine resources.

The convener of the Africa Blue Economy Roundtable, Piriye Kiyaramo, made the appeal while speaking with journalists in Yenagoa. He said the AU framework provides guidance for tackling overfishing, curbing illegal fishing, and expanding fish trade across Africa.

Kiyaramo said proper investment in fisheries and aquaculture would improve food security, create jobs, strengthen climate resilience, and protect livelihoods. He added that South-South governors are well placed to use the region’s rivers, coastlines, and marine resources to support economic growth and help Nigeria meet its commitments under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme and the National Blue Economy Agenda.

He also called on state governments to support artisanal fishers, women, and coastal communities, while incorporating blue economy initiatives into their development plans. Kiyaramo commended Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri for his efforts in advancing Nigeria’s blue economy.
