Lagos Rolls Out Fish Farming Scheme to Support Youth Employment

Lagos State has launched the 2026 Fish Farming Training and Empowerment Programme across its five administrative divisions. The initiative is aimed at promoting rural development, creating jobs and reducing youth unemployment.

The programme, organised by the Centre for Rural Development under the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, began at the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Secretariat in the Ikeja Division. It is focused on helping young people build sustainable livelihoods through fish farming.

Participants received fingerlings, commercial fish feed and mobile fish tanks to support the establishment or expansion of fish farming businesses. Aquaculture experts also trained beneficiaries on water quality management and fish disease prevention, while government officials encouraged them to adopt modern farming and marketing practices.

Beneficiaries said the free farming inputs would reduce the cost of starting fish farming businesses and improve production. They also expressed confidence that the programme would help youth cooperatives build sustainable sources of income within their communities.

This version keeps the language simple, factual and natural, with four short paragraphs that fit a one-minute broadcast.
