New Poultry Feed Innovation Aims to Cut Farmers' Production Costs

Poultry farmers in Tanzania could soon reduce production costs following the development of a new locally produced poultry feed.

The feed was developed by researcher and entrepreneur White Frank Frank through Afrimix Animal Feeds after eight years of research. Produced mainly from locally sourced ingredients, it is expected to sell for between 70,000 and 75,000 Tanzanian shillings per bag, below the current market price of 80,000 to 110,000 shillings.

Feeding trials carried out with researchers from Sokoine University of Agriculture showed that broiler chickens reached market weight while reducing overall production costs by about 20 percent.

Dr. Frank said the innovation was developed to help farmers tackle rising feed and veterinary costs while reducing dependence on imported feed ingredients.

The development comes as Tanzania's poultry industry continues to expand, with more than 83 million day-old chicks produced by April 2026. Afrimix Animal Feeds plans to begin commercial distribution in Dar es Salaam, Coast Region and Morogoro before expanding to other poultry-producing areas across the country.
