A poultry farmer in Kitukutwe Village, Kira Municipality, has expanded his business from 200 chicks to more than 7,000 chickens within three years following support from the Office of the National Chairman, ONC.
The achievement was highlighted during a monitoring visit by ONC Manager, Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, to assess the progress of beneficiaries under the empowerment programme.
Farmer Waswa Abdul Karim Tamale was among 127 beneficiaries who received support in 2023, including 200 chicks and poultry feed to start the project.
Waswa said the farm now generates about 12 million shillings every 35 days and has significantly improved his household income.
Operating on two acres of land, the enterprise combines poultry production with maize and banana farming. Poultry manure is also used as organic fertiliser to improve crop yields and reduce costs.
The farm currently provides jobs for 16 people, including five permanent staff members.
Namyalo commended the farmer for effectively using the support and said the project demonstrates how empowerment programmes can help households move into commercial agriculture.
Waswa said he plans to expand into layer production and improve efficiency with additional equipment to support the growth of the business.
