Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has approved a new retirement policy extending the retirement age for medical and veterinary doctors in the state civil service from 60 to 65 years.
The decision was taken during the State Executive Council meeting in Birnin Kebbi and was announced by the Commissioner for Establishment, Pension and Training, Auwal Dogondaji.
Under the new policy, affected doctors can now serve for up to 40 years instead of 35 years, whichever comes first. The government said the move is aimed at retaining experienced specialists, consultants and surgeons and addressing shortages of healthcare personnel in the state.
Dogondaji said doctors who remain in service beyond 60 years or 35 years of service must undergo annual medical fitness tests and satisfactory performance evaluations.
He added that the policy, which also covers veterinary doctors, takes effect retrospectively from January 1, 2026.
