Katsina Plans Shift from Live Animal Exports to Meat Processing

Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda says the state will phase out the export of live animals and focus on local meat processing to boost jobs and improve earnings for livestock farmers.

Speaking at the North-West Agriculture and Livestock Stakeholders’ Symposium in Katsina, the governor said the policy is part of efforts to strengthen the livestock sector and drive economic growth.

Radda disclosed that the state is constructing a modern slaughterhouse to improve meat processing, hygiene and value addition.

He identified insecurity, poor transport infrastructure, weak markets, climate challenges and limited access to finance as major problems affecting agriculture and livestock production.

The governor said the state is addressing these issues through agricultural support programmes, market upgrades and partnerships with investors and development organisations.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, backed the initiative, saying processing animals close to production centres and transporting packaged meat through cold-chain systems would improve efficiency and create more jobs.

The symposium also focused on improving livestock transportation, strengthening value chains and enhancing food security across the North-West region.
