Governor Umar Namadi says Jigawa State is increasing investment in aquaculture to raise fish production and improve livelihoods. He spoke at the Kalgwai Annual Fishing Festival, where he described the event as part of the state’s plan to develop the fisheries sector. Namadi said the festival is not only cultural but also supports economic growth and unity among fishermen, farmers, and herders.
The one-day event at the Kalgwai Barrage brought together community leaders and stakeholders. The governor said the state has restocked water bodies, produced millions of fingerlings, and supported fishermen with training and modern equipment. He added that funds have been set aside in the 2026 budget to sustain livestock and fisheries development through infrastructure, skills training, and partnerships.
Earlier, the Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar, called for the festival to gain international recognition and raised concerns about poor road access to the venue. The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Abdurrahman Salim, said the government has approved the hatching of five million fish and plans to distribute equipment to fishing groups. He noted that Jigawa has over 243 water bodies suitable for fish production, which are important for jobs, food supply, and income.
