The Federal Government says it is stepping up plans to increase large-scale dairy production through a partnership with the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this in Abuja during a visit by an NSIA team. He said the Ministry will provide technical support for the project and set up a Technical Working Committee to coordinate activities and ensure smooth implementation.
According to the Minister, the committee will include key departments in the Ministry and will work with the NSIA to develop operational plans, support product development, and create a monitoring system to track progress.
He said the initiative is part of the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy aimed at raising local milk production, supporting rural economies, and reducing reliance on imports. Maiha also assured that the government will support infrastructure needs, including power, to meet required standards.
The Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, welcomed the partnership and restated the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable dairy development.
On its part, NSIA said the collaboration will also support the UK Dairy Project, which focuses on improving Nigeria’s dairy value chain. The agency noted ongoing work in Nasarawa State to modernise production, improve cattle breeding, and strengthen feed and pasture systems.
NSIA added that training for farmers and extension workers, along with investment and infrastructure support, will be key parts of the programme. The Technical Working Committee is expected to review the project and provide recommendations to guide its implementation.
