The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has carried out a nationwide baseline survey to support planning and growth in Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The ministry says the study will provide reliable data to guide decisions, using 67 indicators to assess performance and direct future investments. It is also expected to improve policy development and coordination across the industry.
Fieldwork for the survey took place from April 20 to 24, 2026. Data was gathered through record reviews, group discussions, and interviews with stakeholders to combine statistical findings with field experience.
Participants included farmers, pastoralists, ranch operators, processors, traders, input suppliers, service providers, and government officials. Their input reflected key challenges affecting production, market access, and efficiency.
The exercise was conducted in six states across different regions to capture variations in livestock production systems nationwide.
The study covered major livestock activities, including cattle for meat and milk, poultry, small ruminants, and piggery, as well as support services such as veterinary care, feed supply, transport, and markets.
Officials say the findings will be released in the coming weeks and will serve as a benchmark for tracking progress and shaping interventions to improve productivity, food supply, and economic opportunities.
