A new poultry shop has opened in Kanuma, The Gambia, to sell locally produced chickens and poultry products to residents in the area.
The Beteyà Guinar Shop was launched by the Don Bosco 2000 Association as part of a project aimed at connecting local poultry farmers directly to buyers. The project was carried out with partner organizations in Italy, Senegal and The Gambia, with funding support from the Don Bosco in the World Foundation.
The initiative included training local workers, renovating poultry houses and starting regular poultry production. Organizers say the project has created jobs and helped build skills within the community.
Before the shop opened, residents often traveled long distances to buy chickens and poultry products from larger markets. The new outlet is expected to reduce transport costs and improve access to food products for families in Kanuma.
President of Don Bosco 2000 Association, Agostino Sella, said the project shows how international cooperation can support local economic development and create opportunities for communities.
Community representative Abie Jawarà thanked the organizations involved, saying the project has created new opportunities for local families.
Aid worker Gerome Djiba, who helped coordinate the project in The Gambia, said the initiative was made possible through cooperation between local communities and international partners.
According to the World Bank, poverty levels in The Gambia declined in 2024, but challenges remain, including limited job opportunities and poor access to basic services such as electricity and water.
