The Federal Government has validated new national protocols to improve the monitoring, documentation, and conservation of animal genetic resources in Nigeria.
The protocols were approved at the end of a five-day workshop held in Abuja from April 28 to May 5, 2026. The programme was organised by the National Coordination Office of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project under the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
The workshop brought together livestock experts, researchers, breeders, policymakers, development partners, and private sector representatives.
Participants reviewed and approved guidelines for animal genetic characterisation, inventory and monitoring systems, data collection templates, conservation plans for endangered breeds, and investment and communication strategies.
Stakeholders also endorsed the proposed Nigerian Domestic Animal Diversity Information System and an Animal Genetic Resources Dashboard to improve data collection and breed monitoring.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, said accurate data is important for effective breeding programmes and livestock planning across different ecological zones.
The Country Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization, Hussein Gadain, called for stronger animal health systems, improved surveillance, and better laboratory capacity.
National Project Coordinator of the L-PRES Project, Sanusi Abubakar, said the validated protocols support Nigeria’s National Strategy and Action Plan on Animal Genetic Resources launched in 2025.
He added that implementation activities, including advocacy, data collection, and collaboration with technical partners, will continue through the end of the year.
