The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has trained 100 dairy farmers as part of efforts to improve and reform Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The ministry also began a nationwide baseline survey aimed at strengthening data collection, monitoring, and policy planning across the livestock value chain.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the ministry’s Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Henrietta Okokon.
According to the ministry, the survey will support its Monitoring and Evaluation Framework and provide data for decision-making in the livestock industry. It said the exercise covers 67 indicators designed to assess industry performance, monitor trends, and guide investments and government policies.
Fieldwork for the survey was carried out from April 20 to 24 using data analysis, focus group discussions, and interviews with stakeholders.
The ministry said the study covered cattle production for beef and dairy, poultry, sheep and goats, piggery, feed systems, veterinary services, transportation, and market infrastructure.
The exercise was conducted in six states selected to represent different livestock production systems across the country. Participants included farmers, pastoralists, ranch owners, processors, traders, marketers, and government agencies.
The ministry added that the findings would be released in the coming weeks to help track progress, improve coordination, and support food security, economic growth, and sustainable livelihoods in the sector.
