The Federal Government has inaugurated new Veterinary Primary Health Centres in Epe, Lagos State, and Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State to improve animal healthcare services and support livestock businesses across the country.
The centres are part of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development’s plan to establish 774 Veterinary Primary Health Centres in local government areas nationwide.
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Epe, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, represented by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services, Alao Mitchell, said the project is aimed at improving access to veterinary services for livestock farmers.
He said the centres will help strengthen disease prevention, monitoring and control, while also improving livestock production across the country.
The ministry added that the programme is being carried out in phases in 20 states. According to the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Henrietta Okokon, seven model veterinary hospitals have already been completed in states including Sokoto, Niger, Enugu, Ondo, Borno, Adamawa and Edo, while 14 more centres are under construction.
She said the government is working with state authorities and private investors through a Public-Private Partnership arrangement to ensure proper management of the facilities.
The ministry said the centres are expected to provide affordable veterinary care for livestock farmers and other operators in the agricultural value chain, especially small-scale producers. The project is also expected to support more than 450,000 livestock value chain clusters within its first two years.
