Busoga Farmers Receive Fish Farming Training in Kenya

Sixty model farmers from Uganda’s Busoga subregion have completed a three-day study tour in Kenya focused on modern fish and livestock farming as part of efforts to reduce poverty and increase household income.

The farmers, sponsored by State House through the Office of the Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilization, visited Fish Farm Paradise and Resort in Kamulu, Machakos County near Nairobi for training in aquaculture and dairy farming methods.

The programme is part of President Yoweri Museveni’s plan to encourage residents of Busoga to explore other businesses beyond sugarcane farming, wetland rice cultivation and traditional fishing.

Government officials have been promoting fish farming, poultry, cocoa production and dairy farming as alternative sources of income in the region.

Speaking during the visit, senior presidential advisor on poverty alleviation in Busoga, Florence Mutyabule, said fish farming could help improve livelihoods in the subregion because of its access to water bodies including Lake Victoria.

She said communities should make proper use of wetlands through activities such as fish farming while protecting the environment.

Mutyabule also urged the farmers to apply the skills learned during the training and share the knowledge with others in their districts.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Aquaculture Association of Kenya, Stanley Mworia, trained participants on modern fish farming technologies, including fish hatcheries, pond management and fish feed production.

One of the participants, Jacob Kazindura from Jinja, said the training helped him understand modern fish farming methods and identify profitable fish species for business.
