The Federal Government has disbursed ₦396.7 million in insurance claims to smallholder farmers in Plateau, Borno, Kaduna and Taraba states.
The payment was made through the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit in partnership with Leadway Assurance and PULA Advisors. It was announced at the 2025 Wet Season Insurance Pay-out Ceremony in Abuja.
Farmers in Taraba State received ₦154.31 million, while Borno State got ₦127.19 million. Kaduna State received ₦69.73 million, and Plateau State got ₦45.47 million. The payments followed losses linked to weather and other climate-related risks.
The Chief Executive Officer of Leadway Assurance, Gboyega Lesi, said agriculture remains exposed to climate factors and noted that insurance supports farmers in recovering from losses and continuing production.
He added that data from the programme would help guide future planning and improve access to insurance.
Leadway’s Global Head of Agricultural Risk Solutions, Fatona Ayoola, said timely payment of claims enables farmers to recover, reinvest and sustain production.
PULA Advisors Country Manager, Michael Enahoro, said more than 43,000 farmers were covered under the scheme. He added that expanding insurance coverage would require sustained effort over several farming seasons.
He said rising input costs remain a challenge, with some farmers needing up to ₦500,000 to restart farming after losses.
The government said the programme is part of efforts to support farmers, reduce risks and strengthen food production nationwide.
