The Federal Government says it is increasing efforts to develop the livestock sector and improve nutrition across the country.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, stated this during the Nigeria Public Relations Week 2026 held in Kaduna.
The event brought together policymakers, communication experts, and industry players to discuss how communication can support food security and agricultural growth.
Vice President Kashim Shettima also attended the event and unveiled the Kaduna State Banquet Hall.
Speaking on a panel, Maiha said the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is aimed at bringing the sector into the formal economy.
He said the government is focusing on improving animal health, feeding systems, market access, and value addition to boost productivity.
Maiha added that the reforms are also intended to increase access to animal protein and improve nutrition.
He described livestock farming as a profitable business with opportunities in dairy, meat, eggs, and leather production.
Other speakers called for practical reforms in the sector. Brylyne Chitsunge stressed the need to align policies with field realities, especially in disease control and feed systems.
Arik Karani urged better communication to change public perception about agriculture, while Demo Kalla called for curriculum updates and the use of data and technology in farming.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations announced plans to create an Agriculture and Food Security Hub to support communication and stakeholder engagement in the sector.
