FG Plans Youth Recruitment Drive for Livestock Sector

The Federal Government says it will recruit and train 1,000 youths from each state and the Federal Capital Territory to work in the livestock value chain.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, announced the plan in Kaduna during a panel session at the Nigeria Public Relations Week 2026.

He said the programme is aimed at improving food security, creating jobs, and expanding economic activities in the livestock sector.

According to the minister, the training will cover feed and fodder production, animal health services, poultry, rabbit farming, sheep and goat fattening, cattle production, and milk processing.

Maiha said the initiative targets young people, who make up a large share of Nigeria’s population, and is intended to support long-term sector growth.

He noted that despite having about 58 million cattle, Nigeria still spends around 1.5 billion dollars each year on dairy imports.

He added that the livestock sector has an estimated value of over 32 billion dollars, much of which remains untapped.

Also speaking, President of the Africa Public Relations Association, Arik Karani, said communication plays a key role in changing how people view agriculture.

He said early education in farming can help present it as a viable career.

Vice Chairman of Council at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Emmanuel Dandaura, said agriculture should be made more attractive to young people through technology and innovation.

He added that digital tools can help farmers access markets, track production, and improve efficiency.
