FG, EU Roll Out €2.7m Satellite Farming Project to Boost Food Production

The Federal Government, in partnership with the European Union, has launched a €2.7 million agricultural project aimed at improving food production in Nigeria.

The project, titled “Earth Observation for Food Security and Agricultural Productivity in Nigeria,” will use satellite data to support farming activities and decision-making.

Officials say the programme will monitor crop conditions, soil health and weather patterns using Earth Observation technology. The data will be combined with information from the field to guide farmers and policymakers.

The project will run for three years and is expected to improve crop forecasting and help detect pests and drought early.

It is funded by the European Union under its development partnership with Africa and will be implemented by a group of technical partners, including the National Space Research and Development Agency and international research bodies.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security said the use of data in farming is important for improving output and ensuring stability in the sector.

About 300,000 farmers are expected to benefit in the first phase, with access to digital tools to support farm management.

The programme also includes training for extension workers and data analysts to ensure continued use of the technology.

Officials say the project could help reduce post-harvest losses and improve agricultural output, while supporting government planning on land use.

The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen food security and modernise agriculture in Nigeria.
