Jesutofunmi Oniyide secured the top spot among three thousand applicants with his invention, "Vital-Tag." The device is an IoT-enabled smart collar designed to reduce livestock mortality rates by monitoring the health of cows, pigs, and sheep.
The tracker monitors vital signs including heart rate, body temperature, and jaw movement. By tracking jaw activity, the device can detect changes in feeding patterns, which often serve as an early warning sign of illness in animals.
Data collected by the collar is sent directly to farmers via SMS alerts. Oniyide developed the technology to address the financial losses farmers face due to late disease detection. The device is designed to operate for up to three years on a single charge.
Following his national win, Oniyide will represent Nigeria at the Red Bull Basement World Finals in Tokyo, Japan, later this year.
