Members of the House of Representatives have commended Rt. Hon. Inuwa Garba for proposing the establishment of a University of Livestock Development in Gombe State. Lawmakers described the initiative as a step toward strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
The bill was presented on the floor of the House and received support from several lawmakers who noted the importance of the livestock sector in promoting economic growth, food security and job creation.
Leading the debate, Garba said Nigeria has strong livestock potential and the resources needed to build a competitive livestock industry. He said the proposed university would serve as a centre for research, innovation and capacity development to train professionals for the sector.
Garba also referred to efforts by the Gombe State Government under Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to improve livestock production systems and strengthen value chains through investments and reforms. He said these initiatives provide a foundation for establishing a specialised institution to support knowledge and productivity in the sector.
He added that the proposal aligns with the Federal Government’s focus on livestock development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development. Lawmakers supporting the bill said the proposed university could help address challenges in the livestock value chain, including productivity gaps and limited access to modern research.
The bill is expected to undergo further legislative processes.
