Saudi Arabia, Egypt Remain Top Buyers of Sudanese Livestock

The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries says Saudi Arabia and Egypt were the leading importers of Sudanese livestock over the past year.

The ministry’s undersecretary, Dr. Ammar Al-Sheikh, told Sudanhorizon that the two countries remained the largest buyers in 2025. He said livestock exports in 2025 reached 3,905,603 head valued at 468,336,930 dollars, compared with 4,774,141 head valued at 830,602,214 dollars in 2024. He added that revenues from live animal and meat exports between 2023 and 2025 totaled about 3,410,224,348 dollars.

Al-Sheikh also said the ministry is ready to meet demand for the sacrificial Hajj season this year. He noted that the entry of the Dinder quarantine facility into service, alongside other quarantine stations, will help supply large numbers of livestock for the season.

The livestock sector contributes about 20 percent to Sudan’s gross domestic product and accounts for about 40 percent of non-oil exports, despite a drop in production due to the war. Official estimates place Sudan’s livestock population at more than 107 million head, making it one of the country’s main sources of foreign exchange.
