Agro Preciso, in collaboration with Adva Feeds and the Kogi State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project, has trained 67 farmers from the 21 local government areas of Kogi State on improved livestock and poultry farming. The Managing Director of Agro Preciso, Dr. Nurudeen Lawal, disclosed this at the opening of the SASSO sensitization and capacity-building programme held in Lokoja over the weekend.

Lawal said the training followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Agro Preciso Limited and Sasso by Hendrix Genetics, a global animal genetics company, making Agro Preciso the sole agent for the Sasso breed in Nigeria. He said the programme is aimed at promoting the Sasso breed, an improved dual-purpose free-range poultry variety, and equipping stakeholders with better production practices to strengthen the poultry value chain.
The workshop brought together government officials, extension agents, poultry farmers, development partners and private sector players to raise awareness and build capacity. According to Lawal, the Sasso breed performs well in local environments and can produce both quality meat and eggs. He added that the programme targets government agencies, poultry farmers, development partners, agribusinesses and extension workers.
Kogi State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Olufemi Bolarinwa, said the introduction and promotion of improved poultry breeds such as Sasso chickens present an opportunity to enhance food security, increase farmers’ income and improve livelihoods. He said the training provides farmers and extension agents with knowledge on brooding, feeding, disease control and general poultry management.
Bolarinwa added that the ministry will continue to provide support, policy direction and technical guidance to ensure the success of the initiative, while working with development partners and private sector operators to expand improved livestock production systems across the state.
