The Japanese Government and the Lift Above Poverty Organisation have inaugurated a pineapple juice processing factory in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The factory, located in Ukpenu-Emuhi community, was built under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project to support agricultural processing and reduce post-harvest losses.
Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, said the facility would support local processing of agricultural produce and serve as a market for about 500 pineapple farmers. He said about 2,000 farm workers and more than 2,000 traders are expected to benefit from activities linked to the project.
The ambassador said the factory would also be used for training and research and provide industrial experience for students.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Saturday Idehen, said the project supports the state government’s agricultural development plans. He urged farmers to increase production and make use of the facility.
LAPO President, Faith Negbe Osazuwa-Ojo, said the factory was established to address pineapple losses caused by lack of processing facilities. She said the project would be managed by the community to support long-term operation.
