FG Plans Livestock Export Reforms Amid Proposed US Ban

The Federal Government says it plans to reform the livestock export sector, valued at about 3.2 billion dollars.

The Ministry of Livestock Development said the sector is undergoing changes aimed at building a modern and export-oriented red meat industry with improved quality standards.

The ministry said livestock trade within West Africa is mainly carried out through commercial exchanges in live animals that support food supply in neighbouring countries. It said reforms are being implemented to strengthen meat processing, certification and value-added production for regional and continental markets.

The reforms include improvements in animal health management, traceability systems, sanitary compliance and livestock value chains.

The announcement follows a recommendation by members of the United States Congress to block Nigeria’s beef and cattle exports to countries including Ivory Coast, Ghana, South Africa and Senegal.

The recommendation urged the United States President to consider trade measures as part of efforts to address violence linked to Fulani militias.

The Federal Government said it will continue efforts to improve standards and expand livestock exports.
