FG Unveils Livestock Plan to Address Farmer Herder Crisis in Benue

The Federal Government has introduced a livestock development strategy for Benue State aimed at addressing farmer-herder clashes through improved livestock production.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced the plan in Makurdi during the inauguration of the Benue State Commission for Peace and Reconciliation five-year Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2030.

Maiha said recurring clashes over land and water have affected agricultural activities in the state. He said Benue has about 3.4 million hectares of land, with more than 634,000 hectares of arable land unused.

He said modern livestock production would help reduce pressure from open grazing and improve the livestock sector.

The minister said the government plans to revive livestock facilities through a Public-Private Partnership arrangement. The facilities include ranches in Gwer East and Ikyogen, the Yandev Pig Progeny Centre and poultry demonstration centres.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode, said the strategic plan would support peace and development in the state.

The SPRiNG programme said strong institutions are needed to resolve conflicts and maintain peace.
