Angola Expands Poultry Production to Reduce Chicken Imports

Angola is stepping up efforts to grow its poultry industry as the government works to reduce dependence on imported chicken. The sector has become a priority because of the high cost of imports. Minister of Industry and Trade, Rui Miguêns de Oliveira, said the country spends about 850,000 dollars each day importing chicken to meet local demand.

Government data shows that Angola imported about 228,000 tonnes of chicken in 2025, valued at more than 312 million dollars. Although this was an 18.64 percent drop from 2024, officials say the import bill remains high. Authorities say increasing local production would keep more money in the country and support agricultural development and job creation.

Domestic poultry production has increased in recent years. Output rose from about 28,000 tonnes in 2019 to nearly 63,000 tonnes in 2025. However, national demand for chicken is estimated at between 300,000 and 360,000 tonnes annually, meaning local production still covers only part of consumption.

Feed supply, especially corn, is also important for poultry growth. Angola’s corn production increased from 2.8 million tonnes in 2019 to about 3.5 million tonnes in 2025. Officials say this shows the country has the capacity to support a larger poultry industry if farmers receive adequate support.

The government says poultry farming can help diversify the economy beyond oil. The sector supports crop farmers, feed producers, hatcheries, veterinary services, processors, transporters and retailers across the value chain.

However, challenges remain. Farmers face limited access to financing for infrastructure, equipment, chicks, feed and vaccines. Producers also need reliable electricity, water supply and better technical training to improve production and disease control.

Under Angola’s 2023–2027 National Development Plan, the government aims to increase domestic food production, including poultry, to improve food security. Authorities say policy measures and incentives have been introduced to support local farmers and reduce reliance on imports.

Officials say the long-term goal is to build a strong poultry industry that can supply the domestic market and eventually export chicken products to other countries in the region.
