The House of Representatives has begun an investigation into the alleged non-release of N174.26 billion in agricultural intervention funds. The Committee on Agricultural Production and Services is leading the probe. It has asked Ministries, Departments and Agencies and development partners to cooperate fully.
Committee Chairman Bello Ka’oje urged all relevant agencies to provide documents and support for a transparent investigation. The House had earlier adopted a motion mandating a probe of development partner-funded agricultural projects. These include programmes supported by international development institutions.
The committee is examining the circumstances behind the delayed release of the funds. It is also reviewing the continued high cost of fertiliser and its impact on farmers and food production nationwide. Lawmakers say the delays have raised concerns about food security.
According to the committee, some funds already disbursed to government accounts are yet to reach implementing agencies. The delays have reportedly caused farmers to miss planting periods. This has affected expected harvests and raised concerns about future farming cycles.
The committee warned that further delays could affect additional funding support. It urged all agencies responsible for fund release and implementation to cooperate fully. Lawmakers said the aim is to remove bottlenecks and ensure proper implementation of agricultural programmes.
