Stakeholders in Ondo State’s livestock sector have called for a dedicated Livestock Agency to coordinate policies and address challenges. They said the agency would help improve feed production, breed quality, security, and financing.
The call came during a roundtable by the Ondo State Agricultural Commodity Association, which brought together farmers, processors, security officials, and government representatives. The Commissioner for Agriculture, represented by the Director of Veterinary Services, praised the forum as timely for food security.
Participants included goat, piggery, and butchers’ associations. They discussed ways to increase animal protein production and ensure the state produces what it consumes. Stakeholders were urged to make actionable policy recommendations for the proposed agency.
The Ondo State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development urged the government to create a state ministry for livestock. Officials said this would align with federal plans and unlock the economic potential of the sector.
Challenges such as high feed costs, farmer–herder conflicts, and low productivity of local breeds were highlighted. Solutions proposed included pasture development, local feed production, and modern livestock management practices to improve productivity and reduce costs.
