FG Plans Faster Ranching Rollout in Kwara After Attack

The Federal Government says it will fast-track implementation of the National Ranching Programme in Kwara State following a recent deadly attack in one of the state’s local government areas.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this during a condolence visit to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and residents of the state. He said security agencies will continue operations against criminal elements, while reforms in livestock production are being pursued to support long-term stability.

Maiha said ranching, livestock enumeration and digital tagging are part of government plans to improve livestock management and address rural security concerns. He said a ranching template aligned with federal reforms is ready for deployment, with demonstration ranch clusters planned in six geo-economic zones before wider rollout.

He added that discussions have begun with Kwara State officials to position the state for early implementation. The plan includes feedlots, veterinary services, water supply, schools and organised settlements to support sedentary livestock production.

Governor AbdulRazaq welcomed the proposal and pledged cooperation for implementation. He called for local government involvement to strengthen coordination and funding.

The minister said livestock reforms are intended to support food security, livelihoods and stability in rural areas.
