Nigeria Plans Commercial Clove Farming Pilot for 2026

Nigeria plans to begin commercial clove farming in the 2026 wet season as part of a new crop diversification and export initiative. The programme was announced at the end of a farmers’ training workshop in Zaria.

The pilot phase will involve more than 74,000 farmers nationwide, with at least 2,000 participants from each state and the Federal Capital Territory. Farmers will receive improved clove seedlings and basic inputs to cultivate half a hectare each, marking the country’s first organised commercial clove farming effort.

Organisers said cloves are used in food processing, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, with demand in domestic and export markets. They added that Nigeria’s ecological conditions support clove cultivation, placing the country alongside Tanzania’s Zanzibar as a commercial producer in Africa.

Improved clove seeds for the pilot have been sourced from Tanzania. Stakeholders have called on state governments to support the programme through extension services, infrastructure and enabling policies to help farmers meet export quality and phytosanitary standards.
