The Federal Government, through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, L-PRES, has donated more than 200,000 doses of livestock vaccines to Gombe State.
The National Coordinator of L-PRES, Sanusi Abubakar, presented the vaccines to the state government on Monday in Gombe.
Abubakar said the intervention was aimed at strengthening disease prevention and improving animal health across the state.
He said the vaccines would support livestock productivity, protect public health and improve the livelihoods of livestock farmers.
Abubakar, who was represented by Sadik Usman of the National L-PRES, said the donation would help the state address trans-boundary animal diseases that reduce productivity and farmers’ income.
He said the vaccines include 150,000 doses for Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia, 50,000 doses for Newcastle Disease, and 4,000 doses for Foot-and-Mouth Disease.
He added that another batch of vaccines for Peste des Petits Ruminants would be delivered to the state.
Abubakar urged stakeholders to ensure the vaccines reach the intended beneficiaries.
Receiving the vaccines, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Barnabas Malle, said they would be administered free of charge to livestock across the state.
Malle said the donation would complement the state’s annual mass vaccination programme and recalled earlier support for Anthrax vaccination.
He said the state plans to procure additional vaccines to improve coverage and pledged proper use of the donated doses.
The Gombe State L-PRES Project Coordinator, Usman Abubakar, said the intervention was important to the state’s agricultural economy.
He said the targeted diseases are major causes of livestock losses in the region and said a working group would be set up to oversee the vaccination exercise.
He urged herders and livestock farmers to present their animals for the free vaccination programme.
