Kogi State has begun a major push to revive its livestock trade with the rehabilitation and upgrade of nine key livestock markets across the state. The project officially took off at the Okumi Livestock Market in Lokoja, where government officials, community leaders and traders gathered to mark the start of construction work that many believe will change how livestock business is done in the state.
Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr Olufemi Bolarin, said the initiative reflects Governor Ahmed Ododo’s commitment to strengthening the livestock sector and improving security for farmers and traders. He noted that a safer and better organised market system will help attract more business, create jobs and protect the livelihoods of people who depend on livestock for survival.
Project Coordinator Abdulkabir Otaru confirmed that all approvals and procurement processes have been completed, with contracts already awarded and construction set to move quickly. He said the upgraded markets will be delivered within six to twelve months and will include modern facilities such as veterinary clinics, water and sanitation services, security posts and solar-powered lighting.
Community leaders and market associations have pledged their support for the project, while the contractor has promised quality and timely delivery. Once completed, the new-look markets are expected to boost trade, improve animal health and give Kogi’s livestock industry a stronger future.
